Volunteer Opportunities

Team Wild Bird embraces and depends on dedicated, passionate volunteers to assist us in our mission to celebrate environmental education and "Keep Them Flying". We are grateful for every volunteer that is willing to offer their time, energy, and skill-set and welcome persons of all ages and capabilities. Whether you are a local, snowbird, or just passing through, we have a place for you at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center!

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old OR be accompanied by an adult.

Check out our available volunteer opportunities below:

Hospital Volunteers typically assist in basic tasks such as cleaning cages, doing laundry, scrubbing dishes, sweeping, and mopping. Those with more experience may also be taught how to feed baby birds, prepare diets, and assist in handling.

Sanctuary Docents/Volunteers may provide guided tours to visitors of the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, talk to folks about FKWBC's mission, and introduce them to our permanent resident birds. Volunteers may also assist with tasks such as scrubbing our boardwalks, working on maintenance projects, collecting perching materials, grooming our natural mangrove trail, and directing proper parking.

Education/Special Event Volunteers help FKWBC at public events. Come out to help us educate the public about our mission. This is a great way to volunteer if you aren't able to commit to a regular schedule. We contact volunteers prior to each event about your participation.

Transport/Rescue Volunteers are on standby to assist our hospital team in transporting or rescuing injured wildlife and bringing them to our Mission Wild Bird Hospital. Volunteers may assist in capturing injured birds or reuniting healthy babies with their parents. Volunteers must use their own vehicles.

Gift Shop/Education Center Volunteers are responsible for manning the front of our Mission Wild Bird Hospital. This includes greeting guests and handling gift shop transactions. Volunteers may also be asked to help with administrative tasks.

Volunteer Groups can be accommodated on a case-by-case basis. Group work can vary from sorting monofilament to helping out at our hospital or sanctuary. Whether you are part of a school group or a family visiting the Florida Keys, we can find tasks for you to help us with!
